Karridale Bushfire 1961

This book recalls the devastating bushfires that swept through Karridale and its surrounding districts in Western Australia in 1961. A combination of heavy rains in the preceding seasons and a dry winter and spring had led to a significant buildup of fuel in the forests, creating the perfect conditions for a catastrophic fire.

The fire, which raged from February 27th to March 6th, was an event of immense scale and destruction. The fire swept through the small township of Karridale, forcing the evacuation of its 60 residents. The post office, general store, hall, a 100-year-old church, and two houses were completely destroyed. In total, the fire consumed over 100,000 acres of land.
