This booklet is a guide to three short, easy walks in the town of Margaret River. It was developed by the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River as part of the Heritage Trails Network, a statewide project marking the 1988 Bicentenary. The River Walk (2 km), Karri Walk (1.5 km) and Bridge Walk (3 km) all start at Rotary Park, the site of the town’s first settlement. Along the way, it describes the district’s story. This covers early exploration by John Garrett Bussell, the Bussell family’s pastoral settlement at Ellensbrook and Wallcliffe, the timber era of M.C. Davies, and the Group Settlement Scheme. It also covers the Busselton–Augusta railway and the 1876 Georgette rescue by Grace Bussell and Sam Isaacs.
The booklet also retells the Aboriginal legend of Wooditch and Milyan, which explains the creation of the river. It notes the local wildflowers and birdlife, and ends with a list of further reading.
