About Us

Preserving the Stories of Margaret River

Nestled on the scenic banks of the Margaret River at the Old Settlement, the Margaret River & Districts Historical Society (MRDHS) is dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing the rich history of Margaret River and surrounding districts.

Our museum and archives bring local history to life through historic buildings, photographs, family stories, documents, artefacts and memories passed from one generation to the next.

Whether you are discovering the region for the first time, researching family connections, or exploring the history of the South West, we invite you to step into the stories that shaped our community.

Discover the Old Settlement

The Old Settlement is one of Margaret River’s most unique heritage destinations.

Located beside the river in a peaceful natural setting, the site offers visitors the opportunity to experience aspects of everyday life from the early settlement years.

    Explore:
  • The restored 1925 Bramley School
  • An authentic Group Settlement House
  • The historic Blacksmith Workshop
  • Agricultural and farming displays
  • Historic photographs and local archives
  • Exhibitions showcasing the people and events that shaped the district
Each building and collection helps tell the story of the families who built lives here through determination, hard work and community spirit.

Preserving Local History for Future Generations

The Society works to collect and care for historical material connected to Margaret River and nearby districts.

    Our collections include:
  • Historic photographs
  • Family history and ancestry information
  • Newspaper clippings
  • Oral histories and recorded memories
  • Local government and community records
  • Death notices and burial information
  • Maps, documents and historical research
These collections help preserve local stories and support historical research for generations to come.

Research Your Family History

Have ancestors who lived, worked or settled in the Margaret River region?

Our volunteers can assist visitors and researchers in uncovering local connections through our growing collection of historical records and images.

From discovering an old family photograph to tracing early settlers and local identities, every search helps reconnect people with their past.

More Than a Museum

The Margaret River & Districts Historical Society is more than a collection of buildings and objects — it is a place where community history is preserved, shared and celebrated.

Through exhibitions, school visits, heritage projects, local events and historical research, we continue to keep the stories of our district alive.
