Main Street Historic Walk – Site 2

This lot, across the road of Higgins Street, was known as New Bridgefield built in 1929/30 by Gavin Forrest for Mrs Elizabeth Higgins. Then her daughter Agnes commenced a boarding house for many years up to her death in 1989.

Extensive restoration to the premises was done by Agnes's nephew in Tom and wife Carmel Higgins. There had been several owners since, including Brian and Carmel Turner, and in 2003 Sam Caruso bought the property and converted the house into an Italian restaurant known as La Scarpetta Trattoria plus accommodation units at the rear.

If you would like to learn more about the local history of Margaret River, visit The Old Settlement Museum down the river.

The old school, the group settlement house, the blacksmith workshop, and many other buildings with household items, tools and machinery offer an insight into the history of early life in the district and the families that once lived and worked the land.
